DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS
More and more accidents occur at intersections. As an overall rule,
intersections are known to be more dangerous than any other areas of
the road due to evident dangers, like traffic lanes crossing, vehicles
turning, and the need of the road drivers to change speed or end at
signals. According to statistics, almost all car accident fatalities
comprises drivers because of the failure to give away the right
direction, neglecting stop sign, or being unaware of the traffic
light-all intersection accidents.
In some instances, not all intersection accidents are faults of the
drivers. The other main reason for having dangerous intersections is
due to defects in the structure of the roadways or the building of the
road. In other words, something about the intersection itself may have
contributed to the crash--and in most cases, something probably can be
done about it. These roads are improperly designed for some reason
because it allows drivers to see the posted speed limits and the
adequate lines. Maybe, the traffic signals are inappropriately timed,
or they have malfunctioned. The other defects on street ways may be the
irregular placement of stop signs, yield signs, etc., or maybe the
current traffic signs are faded or damaged. Rarely, the car or external
factors may be blamed for the crash. These dangerous defects may lead
to unsafe driving conditions and collisions.
There are types of crashes that occur at intersections. The most common
is the rear-end collision because vehicles often are required to halt
at intersections. However, the most serious crash is the side-impact or
angle collisions. At last, the frontal collisions are probably the
least common of all crashes. These road crashes are very unsafe to all
drivers.
To avoid road crashes, one thing to do is to keep roads safe. But that
depends on the intersection. Safety can be improved through relatively
minor adjustments such as a change in the traffic signal pattern and
improved visibility of signals, signs and pavement markings. Traffic
engineering experts have projected that all crashes could be avoided or
made less harsh through road improvements -- a factor component in
making intersections more driver-friendly.
It is important to solve the problem of driveways that contributes to
crashes because they are too close to intersections. Traffic experts
wanted to avoid this because of road accidents. This can be done by
consolidating driveways; closing them; moving them as far back from the
intersection as possible; and planning future driveways to minimize
interference with traffic flow at the intersection.
